A Young Mom of Two Shares Both of Her Birth Stories – Part 1

With my first baby I went into labor on a Saturday in February of 2005, I was 18 years old at the time. He arrived 6 days early, according to my due date. I had been having Braxton Hicks contractions throughout my pregnancy but the real contractions had just started that day. We saw the Lakeview OBGYN group of doctors. All day I just felt achy and a lot of pressure. We arrived at the Methodist Hospital in downtown Des Moines, IA at about 9pm after deciding my contractions felt intense enough that it was necessary. In triage I was 90% effaced and about 3 cm dilated. I was checked into a room and had to wait over an hour for an epidural due to only one anesthesiologist being on call that night- it felt like forever! I think they had to break my water for me, which wasn’t too bad. Once I got the epidural after being really uncomfortable, I remember them asking me if I wanted to take a nap. I was like, uh no, I can’t nap right now, let’s get this baby out! Our Baby Boy was born after an hour of pushing at 3:24am 🙂 He was 8lb 1oz. While I was pushing the doctor told me he would make a small cut, which required stitches because otherwise I would have torn.

As soon as I delivered, I was able to hold him and my whole world changed. God blessed me that day when he chose for me to be his mom!
